Prentiss Anderson

APACHE JUNCTION AZ (IFS) -- One of Motown's founding fathers, Prentiss Anderson has had an amazing year this year.  It's one of those years where everything starts to go right, and then you lose one of your dear family members.  It's when you cry, its joy and pain.

Still going through the fires of life, Prentiss has released with the majority of the Christian/Gospel market with the Rance Allen Group.  He is known as a songwriter; however, Prentiss is sometimes a musician or vocalist, a manager, a record producer, a tour manager, the on-camera news spokesperson on your television or radio.  His main job was head of the Songwriters' Department for Jobete Music/Motown Records since day one.

From Toledo Ohio Prentiss Anderson aka PRENTISS began his career with The Del-Rios in 1958.   Al Bell was a writer at STAX Records.

He then joined the group known as Lee and The Leopards recording for BERRY GORDY JR. “Come Into My Palace” the second single release on GORDY Records in 1962.

Lee and The Leopards also recorded “ Don’t Press Your Luck” for FORTUNE Records and ”The Gypsy Said” for Fred Kelly at KZ Records in 1965.

PRENTISS remained as a staff music writer for MOTOWN Records up until the company sold to POLYGRAM. As early as the early ’90s, he continued to write songs for Smokey Robinson and The Miracles among many others.

While living in LOS ANGELES he wrote & producer for Lee Rogers and Cardella DeMilo at D-TOWN Records. He was the background singer and tour manager for Eddie Kendricks from the original TEMPTATIONS.

The original TEAC - 3340 four-track recordings were recorded in RG's living room.   From these simple recordings, Prentiss got us the distribution deal to Claridge Records.  With Lee on piano, Steve Scott on drums, Jon Morano on guitar(s), Daryl Koutnik on bass.  The tracks were outstanding.

Cardella was upset. She wanted to be recorded on the big two-inch machines. She cried.  She had lost all believe that Prentiss was not going to get her a record deal.  She called Lee, every day at the hospital to complain about Prentiss.

Lee's kidneys began to fail and off to the hospital he went, where he stayed for over a month.   He got better and had set up a meeting with Frank Slay.  Frank also called Lee a couple of days a week checking upon him.

Upon their meeting at the record company, this writer remembers Frank coming down the hallway and asking for the tape.  "I never should have let you walk out the first time, but that song has haunted me," Frank said while Lee was digging into his meds bag.

With Lee on his walker, and traveling at a snail's pace, Frank had reached his office and that tape blasting down the halls, and Frank was dancing with a big smile on his face.  These tracks were cut on the Teac, engineered by Ingersoll and Smith and they got the deal.

With Lee having a desk job with Claridge working the house promotions for radio, Lee's promotion skills drive Sugarloaf's "Don't Call Us, We'll Call You" to Billboard's Top 5 Hot 100.

This recording of Cardella DiMilo on Claridge Records started its life with Prentiss who at the time was managing Eddie Kendrick's Temptations and Eddie.  Prentiss had every club in Los Angeles in the palm of his hands.  One such young lady and musical society reporter, television series star, and "owned" one night a week at the world-famous Parisian Room which was a Hollywood upper royalty night club, with Roscoe's Chicken and Waffle House across the street.

Everybody came by.  Everybody played that walked into the room.  All the stars are hanging out at their favorite nightspot.  Cameras everywhere to spot them.  It's 7:00pm on a Thursday night also known as Lady's night where all the clubs let the women in free and drinks are all a half price -- and it's Hollywood, the club is packed with lines forming on the outside of the club.  Giving out of the Playboy Limousine, we made our way to the front of the line for the VIP section.

The sponsor of tonight's event is Scope Media who produces several newspapers, television production, and their main girl is Cardella DiMilo.  Cardella is in dire need of a record deal.  Scope Media just wants to handle her on the print media side.  Besides, she sings the blues, gospel music style.  Those styles of songwriters are non-existent or very hard to find.

We were signed to Motown Records and Prentiss' entourage that night included RG Ingersoll, Kenneth Howard Smith (Kenny Smith), T-Boy Ross, and a couple of young ladies that were auditioning, and our star, Lee Rogers who was the closing act.

It was not going to be a "cakewalk" this night.  The opening act was LTD, new kids in town (which stands for Love, Togetherness, and Devotion), was formed in Greensboro, North Carolina, in 1968, when Arthur "Lorenzo" Carnegie (alto and tenor saxes, flute, guitar), Jake Riley (trombone) Carle Wayne Vickers (trumpet, flute, soprano sax) and Abraham "Onion" Miller (tenor sax, vocals), Jeffrey Osborne on drums, et al.)

The last song of the LTD set, the drummer came from behind the drums and took the lead vocals for their last song.  It was their first record release for A&M Records, and Jeffrey Osborne became their lead singer that night, and never got back on the drums. "Back In Love Again" went RIAA Gold for that up and coming band about 10 months later.

Johnny "Guitar" Watson, had another gig late that evening, and he had plenty of time to warm up on Cardella's crowd. After his fifty minute set, Watson left the stage smoking, all the ladies were packed into the club and giving him a standing ovation.  He came back and did an encore.  His albums were climbing the charts, "Gangster of Love" and "Aint That A Bitch".  Watson blew up the club.  The roof was on fire, women screaming and passing out.

Lee Rogers was supposed to follow all this.  Coming out of his smash Billboard R&B hit, "Love Bandit" which was co-written with RG Ingersoll who gets no credit on the label, but has the credit where it counts at Broadcast Music, Inc.

"Love Bandit" was selected as the main theme song and party for the Pimp & Hustlers annual Ball where 5,000 attendees gather.  This year it held at the Elegant Manner in Los Angeles.  Lee's song was also completing with over five other renditions and artists who recorded his song, from ALA, Atlantic, Instant Records (New Orleans), two British Disco Mixes, and here Lee seats on a stage on a bar stool.

Cardella DiMilo came up to the stage to introduce her night's closing artist, Lee Rogers.  She attempted to quiet down the audience, and the bandstand was also changing musicians.  Lee's new house band for his show, no rehearsals, just a list of several songs and the key of the songs.

The drummer on the house set, Bernard Purdy, (Arthea Franklin's drummer) Lead guitar, Melvin "Wah Wah" Watson, Harold Batista on rhythm guitar (Anita Poree's brother, the co-writer of Eddie Kendrick's "Keep On Trucking"). Leroy Vinegar on bass and Billy Preston on the organ.

The piano was Lee's this time with Randy and Michael Brecker on brass along with Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson on tenor.  It was the perfect time for Prentiss to audition his new talent.  He was always looking for that supergroup.

As background singers, Stephanie Spruill (Stephanie and Ramjet), Joyce Kennedy (Earth, Wind & Fire/Mother's Finest) and Carlena Williams (Humble Pie/Peter Frampton).

The lights dimmed down low, and with a simple bar stool on the front edge of the stage, Lee seat there with the microphone in his hand, looked down at our table and Prentiss got up from the table and went to the stage, and whispered something to Lee.  His eyes widened and pulled his head back, saying, "well, O.K., Little Brother." Prentiss returned to the table and was laughing.  We wanted to be in on the conversation, "Lee just trashed the playlist?" RG said.  We all laughed.  Lee was not going to get into a horse race out here.  It's obvious that the crowd belongs to Johnny Watson and LTD.

Lee turned to Purdy, and told him and the band, that he was changing up on the list, and that he wanted John D. Loudermilk's "Tobacco Road" Lou Rawls style.  Purdy told Lee, we can do that.  What key?   Lee said, "My stepdad (John Lee Hooker) always told me, "Boy, stay away from those D Flat Blues," looking back to the band and they all started laughing.

The spotlight was on Lee bathed in a blue blazer, black silk shirt and black tie.

Boom - Boom.
I Was Born. . .
Boom - Boom.
In a dump. . .
Boom - Boom.
My Mama Died
and My Daddy Got Drunk. . .
Boom - Boom.

It was like a bomb going off.  It was so simple, so sweet, pure in heart and Lee had the audience in the palm of his hands and he just gave them a "soul massage".  By the end of the song, which lasted for almost 15 minutes, and the crowd wanted more.  Next on the list was, "Double Love Situation", Wolfman Jacks featured recording on XERB Radio.  "I Want You To Have Everything" followed by "Love Bandit".

That night this writer found out why he was the "Prince Of Detroit and now Los Angeles" too. It was the first time to see why Marvin Gaye's on stage microphone techniques emulated Lee Rogers.

The place was in chaos to see real recording artists and legends, up close and personal for just the price of a club cover charge to keep the non-spenders out.  So this was Thursday nights out in Los Angeles and being with Motown Records.

SOUL N ROCK RECORDS/PLATINUM SOUND

This is the record that Gwendolyn Gordy-Fuqua's famous meeting one and one in her living room in Beverly Hills, where she tells Lee Rogers, RG Ingersoll, and Kenny Smith, that this mansion was built with hits -- I want "smashes".

Wolfman Jack is responsible for this record.  He played the Cassette Single Version.  He played both sides of the record, with "Double Love" breaking into the Top 40.

It was this time that Gwendolyn called a meeting her "hitmen", and told the gang, that she never put good money behind bad money.  "But, this time, you have proved me wrong, and I probably don't know a hit record, if one hit me in the face," Gwen said.

Sometime in between our last meeting, Gwen was under a lot of pressure to give up her position as Executive Vice President, Finance.  Gwen has been writing the checks at Motown since day one.  Berry Gordy, Jr., and Susanne DePasse has gone off to make movies.  You can't blame them.  The math is very simple; $14 Million investment in movies and the return is $225 Million, at the same time, the record company is only generating $20 Million in the same time period.

Make no mistake -- This SNR Records was manufactured and distributed by Hitsville USA/Motown  -- and paid for by Gwendolyn Gordy-Fuqua.  The war at the top of the mountain was lead by Barney Ales and Gwen was in his cross-hairs.  Ales slows down Lee's records, as he controlled the company now as Gwen is going rogue.

With records in hand and in the stores, Wolfman Jack placed "Double Love Situation" in heavy rotation.  "Disco Boogie" was the other side of the single, and it had the juice of its own.  As they say in the industry, a double-sided hit -- very rare.  Within weeks, both songs had landed in the Top 10, with 'Double Love" getting to Number #3.

PRENTISS appears on “FOR MY LOVE“ a Jose Feliciano RCA album as a backup vocalist. PRENTISS was road manager for UNIVERSAL recording artist LIL D and he currently arranged and wrote music for the GRAMMY winning RANCE ALLEN GROUP.

Prentiss' productions was included in the Claridge Records purchase by Sir Paul McCartney and his MPL Communications with a distribution deal that help "jump-start" D-Town Records.
